Sim Van der Ryn

Hearing Sim Van der Ryn contribute his thoughts in a panel with other green building "luminaries" this afternoon was a marvelous experience. I've wanted to see the man behind the words and thoughts ever since reading his seminal book, Ecological Design.

In a gracefully moderated conversation, Sim spoke of the experiences that led him into his field, and the core of whole systems thinking that drives his practice. Very down-to-earth despite his eminence in the field, he deserves the respectful title of grandfather of the movement. And his constructive criticisms of "green building" as a narrowed focus of ecological design (and living) ring very true, ardent without being dismissive.

Continuing daily in his self-described role of "renegade and teacher," it is easy to see why Van der Ryn inspires his students and colleagues to think more broadly, feel more deeply, and act more daringly than they ever imagined they could.
